According to the AXIOS website, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has privately signaled to the Democratic top gifter that he is willing to accept a Democratic presidential candidate other than Biden. Schumer has been insisting in public that he supports Biden, but in private he has taken a completely different attitude. According to three people familiar with the matter, over the past 12 days, Schumer has been listening to the top gifter's thoughts and suggestions on the best way forward for the Democratic Party. Schumer did not indicate who, if any, might be a more likely candidate than Biden, someone he has worked with in the Senate for 20 years. Even before Mr. Biden's poor debate performance, Mr. Schumer had told allies that the late June debate date had two distinct advantages: If Mr. Biden underperformed, he would have time to recover. Or, if Mr. Biden's candidacy was irretrievable, Democrats could choose to find another standard-bearer. Less than 10 minutes after the report, Mr. Schumer rushed to back Mr. Biden for president.
