Google and OpenAI have joined forces to urge President Donald Trump's administration to ease restrictions on artificial intelligence training, particularly on the use of copyrighted material. Both tech giants on Thursday submitted policy proposals for a more flexible approach to artificial intelligence regulation as the administration prepares to develop an "artificial intelligence action plan" by mid-2025.
The proposal submitted by Google and OpenAI is a response to President Trump's new focus on artificial intelligence regulation following the repeal of the previous administration's artificial intelligence executive order in January 2025. OpenAI and Google believe that easing intellectual property barriers is critical to promoting innovation and maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence development.
