On January 16, according to Sky News, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Hamas has reneged on the previous understanding reached on the ceasefire agreement. In a statement, he said Hamas opposed the clause in the agreement that gave Israel a veto over the release of some Palestinian prisoners. He said Hamas was trying to specify which Palestinian prisoners could be released. Netanyahu said he had instructed Israeli negotiators to stick to the earlier agreement. Hamas has yet to respond to Netanyahu's statement. Any agreement would need to be approved by Netanyahu's security cabinet as well as his government.
