The U.S. city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will re-count about 30,000 absentee ballots after it was discovered that the doors of the ballot counting machines were not fully closed. A city spokesperson said that to ensure accuracy, after discussions with election officials and lawyers, it was decided to re-run the ballots. All the counting machines will be cleared and the ballots will be re-entered into the machines, which may add several hours to the counting time, but the processing of ballots and envelopes does not need to be re-done. The problem was caused by human error and no tampering was found. Officials stressed that the recount was designed to ensure the accuracy of the election results.
