On November 1st, artificial intelligence giant OpenAI announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT, enabling it to search the web and provide answers based on the information it finds. The upgrade makes OpenAI more similar to a traditional search engine, putting it in more direct competition with Google. Starting Thursday, ChatGPT paid subscribers will be able to respond to queries by searching the web for the latest information and summarize what they find, rather than relying on potentially outdated data. The search function is powered by OpenAI investor Microsoft's Bing search engine, while also leveraging articles that OpenAI has signed deals with some publishers, such as News Corp, owner of the Wall Street Journal, and The Associated Press.
