Luke Dashjr faced criticism for refusing to assign a BIP number to the proposal of Casey Rodarmor, a core contributor to Bitcoin. Luke Dashjr believed that Ordinals was a spam protocol and therefore did not take the proposal seriously, or even assign a BIP number to it. Luke Dashjr believes that Ordinals and its insertions on the blockchain use Bitcoin Taprot and Segwit discounts to cheaply embed large amounts of data. Ordinals was once referred to as an "error" that needs to be fixed, and Bitcoin's original intention was to handle transactions, not JPEGs. Luke Dashjr even had his mining pool OCEAN filter Ordinals transactions from many of the blocks he mined.
