In the latest move to curb artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes, a bipartisan group of US senators led by Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington on Thursday announced the "Content Source Protection and Prevention of Editing and Deepfake Media Integrity (COPIED) Act".
The COPIED Act requires a standardized method of watermarking artificial intelligence-generated content for easier detection. It also requires artificial intelligence tool providers to allow creators to attach information detailing the origin or "provenance" of their content in a way that cannot be removed.
Senator Cantwell said in a statement that the bill "will provide much-needed transparency for artificial intelligence-generated content". The COPIED bill would also put creators, including local journalists, artists and musicians, back in control of their content through the provenance and watermarking process that I believe is necessary.
