Linea: Matter Labs' application for the ZK trademark violates Ethereum's development principles and the blockchain network convention

On May 31st, Linea said on the X platform that Matter Labs, the entity behind zkSync, has just applied for a trademark for "ZK" as its exclusive intellectual property. Zero Knowledge (widely known as ZK in our industry) is a field of cryptography research co-created by researchers around the world. Many are scaling Ethereum through the zkEVM Layer 2 network. Using a legal framework to assert ownership of the cryptography branch used to develop a permissionless, decentralized L2 execution environment violates the development principles of Ethereum and the conventions of the field we are in. We support Starkware LTD's statement that Matter Labs should live up to their mission and withdraw their trademark application for ZK.
