The White House is preparing for a trilateral meeting of U.S., Egyptian and Israeli officials in Cairo next week to discuss plans to reopen the Rafah crossing and secure the border between Egypt and Gaza, three U.S. and Israeli officials said, according to the AXIOS website. For now, reopening the crossing, preventing Hamas from smuggling weapons from Egypt into the Gaza Strip and maintaining the fragile peace between Israel and Egypt are top priorities for the Biden administration. A U.S. delegation led by Wolf, the senior director for Middle East affairs at the White House National Security Council, is expected to travel to Egypt in the coming days. Biden told Sisi that the U.S. would publicly criticize Egypt if aid trucks did not resume deliveries, a U.S. official said. The U.S. official said he promised the Egyptian president that the U.S. would work to reopen the Rafah crossing as soon as possible if aid resumed.
