On May 30th, according to CNN, two US senators, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren and Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, are urging the Biden administration to do more to combat how drug cartels use cryptocurrencies to smuggle fentanyl (drugs). In a new letter to the Drug Enforcement Administration and the White House, the two senators asked for information on "specific actions" the government has taken to address the role of cryptocurrencies in the fentanyl trade, and what metrics the government uses to measure success.
The Biden administration announced a number of initiatives last year involving law enforcement, intelligence gathering and anti-money laundering capabilities across federal agencies to track and intercept fentanyl proceeds. But now, Warren and Cassidy want to know what progress has been made on those initiatives, what obstacles the administration faces and what Congress can do to help. Senators expressed their "ongoing concerns" about how cryptocurrencies could fuel the deadly fentanyl trade.
