Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, recently said that any price is justified in order to become the first company to develop general artificial intelligence (AGI). "Whether we burn $500 million a year or $5 billion a year or $50 billion a year, I don't care, I really don't care," Altman said in an exchange with Stanford students this week. "As long as we can find a way to pay the bills, we'll do AGI." Altman also said that in the process of spending heavily to develop AGI, he is more concerned about how quickly society can adapt to the progress his company has made.
